Health Benefits of Vetiver Oil

Vetiver is otherwise popularly known as khus-khus and it scientific name is Vetiveria zizanoides. This is a grass with pleasant musky smell. The dried grass and the roots can make a cooling effect to the mind and the body.

This property of vetiver makes it useful for thatching the side panels of room coolers and also useful in thatching the roofs of houses. It is also used as curtains for windows and doors. Along with cooling, vetiver also refreshes the room and expels the insects.

The steam distillation of vetiver roots will give essential oil which consists of alpha and beta vetivone, vetiverol, vetivenyl, vetivene, vetivenate, benzoic acid, furfurol etc. These ingredients of vetiver oil impart medicinal property to the vetiver. Vetiver oil is widely used in making cosmetics, perfumes, soaps, aromatherapy etc.

Uses of Vetiver Oil

Protect the Skin

Vetiver oil can be used as a skin protectant. Add five drops of oil in to hot water containing a little milk or alcohol. This milk or alcohol will act as dispersant which helps to break up the essential oil on the water and thus avoids sensitization of the skin through the oil.

Antiseptic

Vetiver oil is found to have good antiseptic property and this can be applied over wounds. This protects the wounds from getting septic and will wards off the bacteria especially staphylococcus. You can also take the essential oil orally and can thus protect the internal organs and wounds from getting septic. It also helps to heal the wounds by regenerating the tissues.

Nervine

Vetiver essential oil is an ideal tonic for the nervous system as it helps to maintain the nerves in good health. It can also heal the damages that occurres in the nerves due to fear, shock, stress etc and it also helps to avoid the nervous disorders like hysteric attacks, epileptic attacks, Parkinson’s disease etc.

Aphrodisiac

Vetiver oil is found to enhance the sexual desire and give rise to arousals. This is because the sexual desire is more of psychological than physiological and hence the lack of desire for sex, frigidity, impotence etc are controlled by the brain. The components with in the vetiver oil stimulate that part of the brain and act as a remedy for frigidity.

Vetiver oil can also benefits the people suffering from gout, muscular pain, arthritis etc. it will also helps to eradicate the marks and scars like the stretch marks, burns, fat cracks etc from the skin.
