Herbal Remedies with Asafoetida

October 17, 2008

Asafoetida is a herb that is grown commonly Persia, Arab Countries, Afghanistan and India. This is a gum of a particular herb which grows to about 4 feet in height. Pure asafoetida is a little difficult to obtain as a lot of adulteration is prevalent. For medicinal purposes, it is essential to use only pure asafoetida.

Asafoetida is known to produce heat and subside the element of air. It is a vermicide, and stimulates the intestines and gastrium. It is an appetizer and subsides the formation of gas in the stomach. It has an effect on the nerves and stimulates the uterus. Taken in the proper quantity, it is a very good digestive ingredient.

Asafoetida is used in frying vegetables. It gives a natural aromatic taste, but, apart from that also has remedial properties. Vegetables like potatoes and peas are heavy and more difficult to digest. Adding a pinch of asafoetida to these preparations not only enhances the taste of the spices, but also aids in digestion.

Pills are prepared using equal parts of camphor and asafoetida, which are then rubbed in pure honey. These pills given once or twice daily are a useful cure for hysterical fits, abdominal colic, dysmenorrhea and other ailments.

A powder containing eight herbs including asafoetida is a good cure for gastric trouble. The dose taken either during the meal, or after it with buttermilk or plain water is a tested cure.

A pinch of asafoetida when placed in the dental cavity relieves toothache. Asafoetida removes distension and is used freely in Indian preparations. A good nervous tonic and stimulant, asafoetida can cause nausea and vomiting if consumed in excess.

Simple herbs are most often potent cures. Ancient systems of healing are the best ways to treat the body and bring it into order. Old is really, gold.
