Problems of heavy periods are common among menstruating women. Excessive bleeding, also known as Menorrhagia or Hypermenorrhea, is a condition characterized by excessive amount of bleeding, unusually long menstrual period or both.

Women experiencing regular heavy periods often suffer from anemia and fatigue. Sometimes, excessive bleeding creates embarrassment and anxiety, preventing sufferers from going out of their house during periods.

Symptoms of Menorrhagia

The duration of menstrual cycle varies from women to women. It is generally considered normal if the menstrual cycle lasts between 28 and 35 days, and the bleeding lasts for 3 days up to a week. Progesterone is thought to be responsible for excessive bleeding. Hormone therapy and oral contraceptives are generally prescribed to reduce bleeding by controlling the secretion of progesterone. Ibuprofen medicines, which inhibit the action of prostaglandins, are recommended to reduce bleeding and abdominal cramp.

Cinnamon, taken twice a day, in the form of powder or as tea, boiled with water, can help to reduce excess menstrual bleeding. Coriander seeds can also reduce excessive bleeding. Take one tablespoon of coriander seeds and boil it in ½ liter water. Allow the coriander seeds to boil for about 30 minutes.

Drink the coriander seeds decoction to cure problems of excess bleeding. Raspberry can reduce excessive bleeding and cure menstrual cramps. You can also make tea by soaking raspberry leaves in hot water for fifteen to twenty minutes. Drinking raspberry leaves tea could also reduce excess bleeding. Sage is an herb that helps to prevent blood clots.

It is extremely useful for women suffering from heavy periods. Lady’s mantle is another herb used in herbal medicines for curing heavy periods. The salicylic acid present in lady’s mantle cures cramps and pains, and the tannin present in the herb reduces excessive bleeding. Agrimony is another herb, which can be taken in the form of tea to reduce excessive bleeding.

If you are suffering from heavy periods, do not ignore visiting your gynecologist. Heavy menstrual bleeding might be a sign of ovarian tumor, cyst, fibrous growth and even uterine cancer.
