Herbal Remedy for Menstrual Problems

June 12, 2009

During the menstrual cycle, nearly 85 percent of women experience some discomfort and unpleasant symptom. These symptoms are collectively known as premenstrual syndrome. It may last for a few hours or up to several days. Certain herbs are found to be effective in treating common premenstrual syndrome symptoms. Herbs can also cure irregular menstruation and heavy menstrual bleeding problems.

Menstrual cramps

To reduce cramps associated with premenstrual syndrome, false unicorn, red raspberry and cramp bark are often prescribed. Menstrual cramps or dysmenorrhea occurs due to increase in prostaglandin 2 or PG2, just before the onset of period. Also during this time, the calcium level in the body dips. The combined effect of both these changes results in menstrual cramps. Herbs such as ginger, evening primrose, cloves, feverfew, meadowsweet, cinnamon, flaxseed, thyme and garlic can reduce the level of PG2 in the body, preventing painful cramps.

Heavy periods

Some women regularly experience heavy bleeding during their menstruation periods. This chronic heavy menstruation is known as menorrhagia. Herbs such as shepherd’s purse, yarrow and nettles can be used to stop excess bleeding. These herbs work by directing the blood flow away from the pelvis.

Irregular periods

Women who suffer from oligomenorrhea or irregular menstrual periods can benefit from certain herbs. Blue Cohosh, skullcap, jatamansi, parsley and ginger can cure problems of irregular periods. In traditional Chinese medicines, don quai is used for treating irregular menstrual periods. However, this herb should be avoided during pregnancy. Women suffering from heavy menstrual problems and uterine fibroids should also avoid don quai.

To prevent menstrual cramps, heavy periods and irregular periods, you should start taking these herbs from a week ahead of the beginning of your menstruation period. During this time, the hormone levels in your body changes. For the herbs to produce significant result, you should continue taking these herbs for at least three month. The biggest advantage of using herbs in treating menstrual problems is that they hardly have any noticeable side effects.

Normally i take pain killers, but its not good to take. I would try and take the herbs you mentioned.
