Herbs For Preventing Hair Loss

December 7, 2009

Several factors might contribute to hair loss. Nature has offered us a wide range of herbs for preventing hair loss and promoting hair growth. Folk healers recommend herbal hair care products for effectively treating problems of hair loss.

Stinging Nettle

Hormonal changes in the body are one of the major causes of hair loss. The male pattern of baldness is associated with the metabolism of the male hormone. An enzyme named 5 alpha reductase combines with testosterone to form Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Male pattern balding is linked with the DHT production. Studies have shown that stinging nettle could prevent formation of DHT.

Green tea

We all know that green tea is good for our health. In traditional Chinese medicine, green tea is also used for arresting hair loss and increasing growth of new hair. It is believed that by inhibiting the activity of the 5 alpha reductase hormone, green tea could prevent baldness. Folk healers claim that drinking three to four cups of green tea regularly could help to prevent male pattern baldness.

Flax seed oil

Infection of the scalp can cause hair fall. To treat scalp infection you can apply flax seed oil on the scalp. Lignan, a plant compound found in flax seed, could kill bacteria and fungi responsible for developing lesions on the scalp. You can also take a teaspoon of flax seed oil daily to cure scalp infection and prevent hair fall.

Evening primrose oil

Skin allergies are also one of the causes of hair loss. The anti-inflammatory property of the evening primrose oil is effective in treating skin allergy and arresting hair loss. To treat allergy, you can apply primrose oil on your scalp or take 1000mg of evening primrose oil, three times a day, until the allergy is cured.

Ginko biloba

Ginko biloba is a popular herb recommended by folk healers for preventing hair loss. By increasing blood circulation throughout the body, including the scalp, ginko biloba increases supply of nutrients to the hair follicles, preventing hair loss and promoting growth of hair.

Arnica

Arnica oil is extremely effective in aiding hair growth.

Chamomile

Another useful herb for preventing hair loss is chamomile. Hair loss caused by excess dandruff could be treated with chamomile.
