Home Remedies for Anemia

March 26, 2009

Anemia is a condition of the body in which the haemoglobin count of the body falls below the normal level. Anemia is a common problem disturbing individuals, especially ladies. In India, six out of ten ladies are anemic. This occurs because of lack of the basic raw materials required for the formation of haemoglobin and Red Blood Cells (RBC). Those basic raw materials are iron, proteins, vitamins (Vitamin B 12 in particular) and folic acid.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of anemia are weakness fatigue and giddiness. Other symptoms are haggard look, poor memory, dull and tired looking eyes, premature wrinkles, headache, slow healing of wounds and palpitations.

Causes

Lack of iron and vitamin B 12 and other vital minerals cause anemia. It also occurs because of bone marrow defects which lead to diminished formation of RBCS. Heavy bleeding due to injuries, haemorrhage, and bleeding piles also cause anemia.

Remedies

Beets

Beets are very effective in increasing the haemoglobin rate and thus curing anemia. Beet juice is rich in iron, phosphorus, calcium, sulphur, vitamin B 1, B2, B12 and also vitamin P. These help in formation of haemoglobin in the blood. It also helps in increasing the bone marrow and increases the rate of formation of RBC. One glass of beet juice is to be consumed daily at breakfast. It not only cures anemia but also strengthens the body’s resistant power.

Fenugreek leaves

Fenugreek leaves, being rich in iron, are also very helpful during anemia. Cooked fenugreek leaves are to be consumed daily, especially by adolescent girls on the onset of menstruation to avoid anemia and to increase the RBC content of blood.

Spinach and lettuce

These two leafy vegetables are very rich sources of iron and help in the treatment of anemia. Cooked spinach can be taken as a side dish everyday while lettuce is good as salad.

Almonds

Almonds are very good sources of iron and copper which help increase the haemoglobin level in blood. Soak 7-8 almonds in water for 3 hours and remove its skin. You may eat the soaked almonds or make a paste of it and swallow it. It is an effective medicine in all forms. However this medication is to be followed for three months.

Other than these remedies, one must add honey, bananas, raisins, onions, radish, plums, black grapes and strawberries to one’s diet to help provide the body with adequate amount of iron, phosphorus and other minerals along with important vitamins.
