March 27, 2009

The term ‘Asthma’ means ‘out of breath’ or ’short-drawn breath’. It is the most common and upsetting respiratory disease which occur when the body reacts with any one or more allergens. An Asthma patient gets frequent attacks of breathlessness, while remaining normal in between. During an asthma attack, a patient would gasp for breath and would find it more difficult to inhale (breath in) than exhale (breath out).

Causes

There can be several causes for asthma. Asthma may be due to a sensitivity caused due to weather change. Asthma is basically an allergic situation and can be caused by anything that causes allergy. Food, drinks, perfumes, pollens are common causes of asthma. The most common cause of asthma is dust is dust and allergy to it.

Remedies

Though asthma has no permanent cure, yet Nature has many gifts for us that can be used to provide relief to the patient during an asthma attack. Few of the most common home remedies are given below.

Honey

Honey is one of the commonest of cures fro asthma. Carry a pot of honey under the nose of the patient and let him inhale the air that comes into contact by means of it. This makes breathing easier and deeper.

Lemon

Lemon juice is another good remedy for asthma. Lemon juice helps control all forms of allergy and thus prevents any asthma attack. Take the juice of one lemon in one glass of warm water and take it along meals. This is a very good preventive measure for asthma attack.

Figs

Figs are the best fruit for asthma patients. Take 4 figs and wash them thoroughly with warm water. Soak them overnight and eat them the next morning. They help in releasing the phlegm and make the patient breath more easily.

Ginger

1 teaspoon of fresh ginger juice, mixed with a cup of fenugreek decoction and honey to taste, acts as a brilliant expectorant in cases of asthma. The decoction of fenugreek can be made by adding one tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in a cupful of water. This remedy must be taken once in the morning and once in the evening.

Bitter gourd roots

A teaspoon of bitter gourd root paste, mixed with 1 tsp of honey or juice of the basil (tulsi) leaves, given once every night for a month, acts as an exceptional medicine for asthma.

Garlic

Ten garlic cloves, boiled in 30 ml of milk, create an excellent medicine for the early stages of asthma. This mixture must he taken once a day by the patient. Steaming ginger tea with two minced garlic cloves in it also helps to keep the trouble under control. This must be taken once in the morning and once in the evening.

Apart from following these remedies, the patient must also pursue the other laws of nature. Air, sun, and water are great remedial agents. Normal fasting once a week, breathing exercises, fresh air, a dry climate, light exercises, and right posture go a long way in treating the disease.
