Home Remedies for Bad Breath (Halitosis)
April 4, 2009
Bad breath is quite a common problem these days. Unfortunately people suffering from it hardly realize it and do very little to prevent it, thus causing problems and irritation to nearby people.
The medical term for this problem is Halitosis.
Symptoms
One can check whether one suffers from bad breath or not by putting a handkerchief in front of his/her mouth and breathing into it. If the handkerchief is odorous, then he/she is suffering from bad breath.
Causes
The most common cause of bad breath is diseased gums and decayed tooth. Dental decay at the roots of the teeth may result in sore in the gums with foul-smelling pus, giving an unpleasant odor to the breath. Even small holes in the teeth may give a place where germs can grow and release foul odors. Other causes of bad breath are chronic infections in the nose, throat, respiratory area, or stomach, chronic tonsillitis, lung diseases like chronic bronchitis, chronic gastritis, and sinusitis which causes a release at the back of the throat. Many cases of bad breath, however, are caused by gastro-intestinal disorders, intestinal sluggishness and mainly by chronic constipation.
Remedies
Avocado
Avocado is a very effective remedy for bad breath and works better than any medicine or lotion. It efficiently removes intestinal putrefaction or decay which is one of the most important causes of bad breath.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek is proved to be the best cure for bad breath. A tea made from the seeds of this vegetable must be taken frequently for correcting the situation. This tea is made by putting one teaspoon of seeds in half a liter of cold water and permits it to simmer for fifteen minutes over a low flame. It must then be strained and used as tea.
Parsley
Boil two cups of water with several twigs of parsley, coarsely cut, along with two or three whole cloves or a quarter teaspoon of ground cloves. This infusion should be stirred occasionally while cooling. It must then be strained and used as a gargle 5 times a day.
Guava
Chewing of guava makes the teeth stronger and gums healthier. Guava is a rich source of tannic, malic, oxalic, and phosphoric acids as well as calcium, oxalate, and manganese. Chewing a guava daily cures bleeding gums and discontinues bad breath. Munching or chewing tender leaves of guava tree also stops bleeding from gums and bad breath.
