Home Remedies for Constipation

March 19, 2009

Constipation is a common digestive disorder resulting in infrequent bowel movements. Constipation in itself is not a big problem but causes  several diseases as it produces toxins which are not properly flushed out and when these toxins enter the bloodstream, they give rise to many illnesses.

Symptoms of Constipation

The most common symptom of constipation is continuous irregular release of solid faecal matter. Chronic constipation leads to uneasiness, depression, headache etc. Other symptoms of constipation are coated tongue, bad breath, nausea and loss of appetite. It also causes dark circles under the eyes, ulcers in the mouth and pimples. Pain in the lumbar region, acidity and insomnia and heart burn also follow.

Causes

The most common cause of constipation is faulty diets and unhealthy eating habits. Not properly chewed food fails to digest and causes constipation. Other reasons are in-taking of excessive meat, drinking of strong tea or coffee, lack of sufficient water, lack of enough vitamin-rich and fibre-rich food. Over-eating or irregular eating also causes poor bowel function.

Remedies

Fruits are the best medicine for constipation except banana and jack fruit.

Bael Fruit

Bael fruit is the best medicine for constipation. Consuming bael sherbat twice a day is the best remedy but one can also consume it as a fruit. When consumed daily, it takes a month to remove the old faecal matter.

Guava

Guava is also very helpful during constipation. The seeds of the fruit add roughage to the diet and help in evacuation of the bowel. On an average an adult must consume two guavas a day to have the effect.

Pear

Pears are a good remedy for constipation, especially chronic constipation. Generally one pear a day after breakfast or dinner is good in itself. But in case of chronic constipation the patient must consume and exclusive diet of pear directly or as juice.

Grapes

Grapes, being a laxative food not only clear the bowel but also tone the stomach muscles and the intestine. If grapes are not available, one may also try raisins soaked in water as an alternative.

Orange

Oranges are also a very good cure for constipation. The juice of the fruit stimulates the peristaltic movement of the stomach muscles and does not allow accumulation of residues in the colon. Two oranges a day should be taken regularly for at least a fortnight to see the effect.

Apart from theses, other cures to constipation are spinach, figs, papaya and lime juice with salt.
