Bacteria which live in our mouths, combine with mucous and food particles and form a colorless sticky substance known as plaque. If the plaque which is being continuously deposited on the teeth and the gum line is not removed by brushing and flossing then it becomes very harmful and starts corroding the gums and the soft tissues.

The gums become swollen and red and start bleeding. The initial stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis which if not treated timely, can develop into a more serious form of gum disease known as periodontal disease.

As the disease progresses there is tooth sensitivity, loss of bone that supports the tooth, foul smell from the mouth, painful and bleeding gums, receding gums and painful chewing. People who have diabetes or cancer and AIDS and people who smoke a lot are more liable to develop gum diseases.
