Home Remedies for Laryngitis


The Laryngitis is a term that is used to describe inflammation of larynx, also known as voice box. The main causes of laryngitis include protracted voice strain, inhalation of smoke fumes and viral infections.

Further, the laryngitis is classified into two categories which are acute and chronic. Acute laryngitis only lasts for few days and does not need much medication whereas the chronic laryngitis might prevail for few weeks and does require antibiotics or medications.

The symptoms of laryngitis comprise sore throat, mild fever, itching, dryness of throat and hoarseness. By following these home remedies, it is possible for an individual suffering from acute or chronic laryngitis to get immediate relief from sore throat, itching and hoarseness.

Lemon Tea – The use of lemon tea to cure hoarseness is one of most adapted remedies by professional singers. Lemon tea comprises tannic acids which assist in smoothening of inflamed throat tissues. The warm lemon tea should be consumed for at least 2-3 times during a day to eradicate mucus from voice box.

Hydration – To avert the extreme dryness of larynx, at least 10-12 glasses of normal temperature water should be consumed. Sufficient lubrication of larynx prevents chronic laryngitis and also provides instant relief from irritation. The consumption of alcohol based drinks should be avoided during laryngitis as alcoholic drinks promote dryness and irritation.

Steam – It is advisable for persons suffering from laryngitis to inhale steam for at least 2-3 times during a day. Inhalation of steam relaxes the larynx and clears air passage to facilitate comfortable breathing and talking.

Avoid Salt – Most of the people use salty water for gargling with intention to get rid of irritation whereas, the fact is that use of salty water during laryngitis rapidly dries out the throat. Any sort of gargling should be avoided as vibrations might leads to smacking of vocal cords against each other which further results in increased irritation and pain.

Avoid Being Loud – This is a preventive technique to avert severe damage to larynx during laryngitis. It is important to stay quiet or if necessary talk in normal tone and pitch. It is must to avoid whispering as it puts much strain on vocal cords as compared to normal level of speaking.

Smoking – To attain desired results in a short span of time, it is necessary that the person suffering from laryngitis should quit smoking cigarettes or cigars.
