Home Remedies For Swollen Lips

An essential part of facial features, lips adds attractiveness and glamorous look   to one’s personality. However, the lips, if swollen have the potential to put someone in awkward situation.

Responsible elements for swelling of lips are allergic reactions including food reaction, viral infection, a minor cut or injury inside the lips, insect bite and sting such as ants and bees. Swelling of lips due to allergies from certain food substance is accompanied with swollen tongue, irritating lips and rash around mouth.

Lips are more prone to an injury because of their exposed location and vulnerable nature.  A slight hit may cut or crush inside layer of the Lips against teeth. Practicing few home remedies provide excellent help to relieve discomfort and swelling of lips.

Cold application helps in reducing pain and swelling. A few ice cubes wrapped in towel sooth the irritation and reduce swelling of lips. Another remedy is keeping a spoon in the fridge until it becomes chill. Take out chilled spoon from the freezer and gently press it on swollen lips.

Beside cold applications, hot packs contribute to control swelling as heat decreases circulation of blood to injured cells. Immerse a clean cloth in warm water and place it over swollen lips for 10-15 minutes.

Soak a tea bag in warm water. Let it cool before keeping it on swelled portion of lips. Repetition of the tea bag application helps in reducing swelling of lips.

Mix water with turmeric powder and fuller’s earth to form a paste. Application of the mixture on swollen lips results in termination of swelling as fuller’s earth possesses healing properties while turmeric powder is natural anti- septic.  Application of Aloe vera gel is effective home remedy to soothe and treat swelling of lips. Immerse a wet finger in table salt and put it on injured lip.

Swelling of lips due to food allergy is an adverse reaction of immune system towards a particular substance available in eatable and is triggered by intake of that substance. Take notice of food allergens and preferably avoid such foods responsible for swelling of lips.

Intake of sufficient liquids, water and fresh fruit juices protect lips from dryness and keeps lips moisturized. Refrain from sugar, cheese and caffeinated drinks instead consume diet rich in vitamin B and C.
