How to deflate a swollen finger?

  • I'm not a doctor, but here are some common suggestions for reducing swelling in a finger:
    1. Rest and elevate the affected hand: Keep your hand elevated above your heart level to reduce blood flow and swelling. Resting the hand may also help reduce further injury.
    2. Apply a cold compress: Wrap an ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables in a thin cloth and apply it to the swollen finger for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours. Cold therapy can help reduce swelling by constricting blood vessels.
    3. Compression: Wrap a compression bandage or elastic bandage around the swollen finger. Make sure it's not too tight to restrict blood flow but provides enough compression to reduce swelling.
    4. Keep moving: Gently flex and extend your finger to promote blood circulation and prevent stiffness. However, avoid any strenuous or painful movements.
    5. Over-the-counter pain relievers: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or aspirin may help reduce pain and inflammation. Follow the instructions provided on the packaging and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.
    6. Avoid activities that may exacerbate swelling: Refrain from any activities or movements that may further aggravate the swelling, such as excessive use of the hand or using tight-fitting rings.
    7. If the swelling persists, worsens, or is accompanied by severe pain, redness, numbness, or difficulty moving the finger, it is important to seek medical attention from a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
