How To Prevent Cervical Cancer

The lower end of the uterus is known as the cervix. Cancer that develops in the tissues of the cervix is known as cervical cancer. Cervical cancer develops slowly. In the early stage of the cancer, you could hardly experience any symptom of the disease. This is one of the few forms of cancer that could be prevented.

Pap smear test

The risk of cervical cancer could be significantly reduced with regular Pap smear test. With the help of this test, abnormal cells in the cervix that could lead to cancer could be detected. Early diagnosis of cervical cancer helps to cure the disease. Pap test is recommended for sexually active women. Sexually active women, below 30 years of age, should have at least one Pap test every year. After your 30th birthday, you should undergo Pap test for three successive years. After which, following your physician’s advice you can have Pap smear test once in two or three years. If no abnormality has been detected in earlier Pap tests, after menopause you can ask your doctor whether it is safe to stop Pap tests.

Practicing safe sex

Sexually transmitted diseases could increase the risk of developing cervical cancer. Practicing safe sex could help to reduce the risk of these diseases. Certain types of human papillomaviruses (HPV) are associated with cervical cancer. It believed that by using condoms during sexual activities the risk of infections could be reduced. Avoiding multiple sexual partners could reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases and consequently cervical cancer.

Vaccination

Cervical cancer vaccine could reduce the risk of this disease. This vaccine could prevent infections caused by two types of human papillomaviruses (HPV). The first dose of the cervical cancer vaccine could be given at the age of 11 or 12. Two months after giving the first dose of the vaccine, the second dose is given. The third dose is given four months after the second dose.

Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables

Researchers have found that diet rich in vegetables and fruits could reduce the risk of cervical cancer.

Quit smoking

Smoking could increase the risk of developing cervical cancer in women suffering from HPV infection.
