Importance of Copper

August 25, 2009

Copper is an important trace mineral. As little as 75 to 100mg of copper present in our body promotes the metabolism of the body. After iron and zinc, this is the most important mineral needed for healthy living. Copper is present in several enzymes in our body.

Sources of copper

You can meet your copper requirement from liver, meat, seafood, whole grains and beans. Sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, soybeans, barley, oat, garlic, lentils and crimini mushrooms are some of the popular sources of copper. You can also get some copper by drinking water from copper vessels.

Helps body to use iron

Anemia is not necessarily caused by iron deficiency in the body, but copper deficiency can also be responsible for this condition. Copper is the major component of ceruloplasmin, which is a type of protein that acts as a catalyst needed for the oxidation of iron. Oxidation of iron helps to bind iron to transferrin, which carries iron to the cells and tissues of the body that need iron.

Development of bones and tissues

Copper is needed for bone and tissue development. It is an important ingredient of the enzyme lysyl oxidase, which is needed for manufacturing collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are the primary protein component of our bones and tissues.

For retaining hair and skin color

Our skin and hair derive their color from melanin. An enzyme named tyrosinase converts tyrosine into melanin. Copper is the major component of this enzyme tyrosinase.

Removal of free radicals

Copper along with zinc is needed to flash out superoxide dismutase radicals speedily from the body. These radicals are produced during the metabolism process of the body. These are also the by products left behind after the invading germs are annihilated by the white blood cells. Speedy elimination of these radicals helps to prevent cellular damage.

Thyroid function

Copper is needed for manufacturing thyroxin. Copper deficiency might reduce thyroxin secretion, causing thyroid malfunction.

Improves brain function

Copper is good for the brain. It helps to balance the different functions of the brain.

Fights infection

Copper can help in the destruction of E coli bacteria. This mineral is also needed for fast healing of wounds.
