Folate
Folate is the natural form of vitamin B9. It is also known as folic acid. However, there is a distinct difference between folate and folic acid. Folate is the bioactive form of vitamin B, which occurs naturally in nature. Folic acid on the other hand is a synthetic form of vitamin B9.
In the human body, folic acid is converted into folate. Studies have shown that people with specific genes could not absorb folic acid. For them, folate obtained from foods and certain supplements is the most suitable source of vitamin B9.
Scientists believe that almost 40 per cent adults have genetic flaws that impair folic acid absorption. Researchers have found that folate could improve brain function. In women, low folate level in the blood increases the risk of depression.
Folate is present in beans, lentils, broccoli, seeds, leafy green vegetables, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, banana, avocado, strawberries and eggs.
Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 is another essential nutrient for the brain. It is necessary for the synthesis of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates our moods. Vitamin B6 deficiency could lead to nervous system disorders. Insomnia could be a symptom of low vitamin B6 level in the body.
Vitamin B6 is found in leafy green vegetables, mushrooms, garlic, peppers, asparagus, cruciferous vegetables and banana.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 deficiency impairs the normal functions of the brain and the nervous system. Metabolic complications that cause neurological disorders develop from vitamin B12 deficiency. Studies have shown that elevated folic acid in the blood plasma worsens metabolic complications caused by vitamin B12 deficiency.
Vitamin B12 occurs naturally in animal food products. It is found in liver, organ meat, eggs, seafood and dairy products. Diets deficient in animal proteins usually lack vitamin B12.
Vitamin B12 deficiency increases the risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s diseases. Vitamin B12 supplements are usually recommended for vegetarians, vegans, pregnant and breastfeeding women.
