Insomnia – Its Causes and Cures

December 10, 2008

Of all ailments, insomnia is perhaps the most scary. The idea of losing a night’s precious sleep is enough to give anyone undue anxiety.

Insomnia or sleeplessness is not only an ailment in itself, but also has great impact on the health and beauty of a person. Mental rest is completely deprived. Sleep is very important to everyone, as it gives relief from tension, and rests both the body and the brain. It gives the body the ability to relax, and prepare to take on the stress of the next day. It helps the cells build and grow, and also strengthens the body as a whole.

The amount of sleep required varies from person to person depending on the stage of life, and lifestyle as well. Children require larger amounts of sleep, and as we age, the amount of continued sleep required by the body lessens. During old age, the tendency to get restful, continued sleep is quite rare, and sleeplessness is a common problem. People who undertake strenuous physical exersion during the day are more in need, and more likely to get better sleep than those who lead more sedentary lives. Normally, about seven to eight hours of sleep every night is essential for the body.

Among the most common causes of insomnia are worries, stress and anxiety. Overworking, and over excitement are also likely reasons. A dull brain, suppressed feelings, constipation, over eating, excessive consumption of tea and coffee, smoking, going to bed hungry are other probable causes of insomnia. Any of the above factors have the tendency to irritate the nerves, and cause sleeplessness.

The most common recourse is to take sleeping pills. These do not help, but only harm the body. They have many side effects like infections, rashes, indigestion. Instead of having medicines, try to start by regularising your sleep routine. Give yourself a schedule and stick with it through the day. Go to bed early, and wake up early for best results.

A balanced, healthy diet that incorporates all food types and has nutrients like iron, phosphorous, zinc and calcium are essential.

Keep the mind rested by reading some light material or listening to some soothing music before going to bed at night. Try lying on one side while going to bed. Make sure you go for walks during the day. This will help refresh the mind and body greatly. Also, you could try soaking the feet in warm water with a little salt added. This will help relieve stress and strain from the feet, and also ensure you sound, restful sleep.
