Keeping Eyes Healthy

How the eyes see is a lot more important than the way they look. It is most important to care for the eyes well in order to keep them working properly. Choices we make about our lifestyle and diet play an important role in the functioning of the eyes in the long run.

The sun is extremely bad for the eyes as direct sunlight can sometimes even cause blindness. It is important to ensure that shades are worn to protect the eyes from not only direct harsh sunlight, but also when the sky is overcast. Sun shades that are chosen must have protection from ultraviolet rays.

Any acts that require lots of focus and concentration should be undertaken while giving the eyes regular rest at intervals. While reading, working on the computer or even at the office, take frequent breaks by looking away or shutting the eyes for a few minutes. This will help relieve the eyes and prevent straining them. Use protective glasses if required which will also help minimise strain.

When touching some oily, contaminated or even toxic, make sure you wash your hands well before you undertake any other activity to prevent contaminating the eyes.

Splash the eyes with cold tap water when returning from outside. This will not only refresh them greatly, but also clean them of dirt and dust.

A diet high in carotenoids, vitamins, minerals and sulphur bearing amino acids is recommended. Green vegetables and plenty of fresh fruits and juices are very good for the eyes. Drink plenty of water, and avoid carbonated drinks as they can dehydrate the eyes.

Blink often. It cleans the eyes, rests them and also helps keep them hydrated. A simple almost involuntary action takes care of the eyes more than we can imagine.

Simple eye exercises should be done regularly. This will help energise them, keep them active, and also increase the flow of blood to the eyes. Toxins are also washed out more easily.
