Kidney Stone Prevention With Fruit Juices


Presence of stones in the kidneys is an extremely painful condition. Crystallization of the minerals present in the urine forms these stones in the kidneys. If for some reason the normal balance of minerals, fluids and acids are destroyed, the urine becomes highly concentrated, increasing the crystallization of the minerals present in it.

Urine that is either highly acidic or highly alkaline increases the risk of formation of kidney stones. Absence or low level of substances in the urine that prevents conglomeration of the crystals aggravates the risk of formation of kidney stones. Even after removing the stones from your kidney, they might recur, causing reappearance of the symptoms of the ailment. Studies have shown that several fruit juices in diet could help to prevent formation of kidney stones. These fruit juices could also help to dissolve the stones and prevent recurrence of kidney stones.

Orange juice

People who have a high risk of developing kidney stones could benefit from regular intake of orange juice. According to a study, drinking a glass of orange juice everyday could reduce the risk of kidney stone formation. To prevent recurrent kidney stones, often intake of potassium citrate is recommended by physicians. However, some people could not tolerate potassium citrate owing to its adverse side effect on the gastrointestinal health. Researchers have found that potassium citrate could be replaced with orange juice, which is a good source of citrate. Orange juice increases the level of citrate in the urine. High level of citrate in the urine prevents formation of calcium oxalate stones in the kidney. Orange juice also lowers that rate of crystallization of uric acid in the urine.

Lemon juice

Having a glass of lemon juice everyday could prevent formation of kidney stones. Lemon juice is a rich source of citric acid. Low citrate content in the urine is believed to be responsible for formation of calcium stones in the kidney. To increase the citrate content in the urine, people suffering from kidney stones should consume at least one glass of lemon juice every day.

Blackcurrant juice

According to a study, blackcurrant juice could prevent formation of uric acid stones in the kidney.
