Lowering Triglycerides Naturally


The large fat molecules present in the fatty foods that we eat are broken down during digestion into triglycerides. Triglycerides are the most important form of body fat. The energy content in triglycerides is greater than that in carbohydrates and proteins. The extra carbohydrates and proteins, which are not converted into energy, are transformed into triglycerides. Triglycerides are essential for healthy living. However, excess triglycerides could harm your body.

Causes of high triglycerides

For healthy living, your triglyceride level should be less than 150 mg/dL Triglycerides level between 149 and 200 is considered borderline high. High triglyceride level is usually seen in obese and overweight people. If you fail to burn the excess calories in your diet, your body will convert the excess carbohydrates and proteins into triglycerides, pushing up the triglyceride level in your blood.

Slow metabolism rate is often blamed for abnormally high triglyceride levels. Hypothyroidism patients usually have excess triglycerides in their blood. High triglyceride is often a symptom of kidney disease and high blood sugar level. Heavy drinking might increase the triglyceride level in your blood. High triglyceride could be the side effect of certain medications. Diuretics, blood pressure lowering drugs, birth control pills, estrogen and steroids might increase the triglyceride level.

Lowering triglycerides

Triglycerides could be lowered naturally with the help of a healthy low fat diet. The total fat in your diet should be less than 30 percent of your total calorie intake. Saturated fats should comprise less than 10 percent of your total fat intake. Omega-3 fatty acid rich foods might decrease your triglyceride level naturally. At least three servings of fish every week could reduce your triglyceride level. You can even take fish oil supplements to beat this condition.

You can normalize your triglyceride level by increasing the fiber content in your diet. By binding with the fats in your intestines, dietary fibers aid fat removal. Limit consumption of refined carbohydrates and sugary foods. Foods rich in vitamin B3 or niacin could normalize your triglyceride level. Niacin supplements could be taken to normalize your lipid profile. Cinnamon, a common culinary herb, could reduce your triglyceride level.

Regular physical activities, for at least 30 minutes five times a day, could melt the excess fat in your body.
