Medicinal Uses Of Butterbur

Butterbur is a perennial herb that can be found in the temperate regions of Europe, North America and Asia. The botanical name of this herb is Petasites officinalis. The butterbur plants have large leaves.

Only a single leaf can become wide enough to resemble the shape of an umbrella. White or purplish clusters of flower heads blossom during the spring. For centuries, the butterbur herb is used for treating illnesses.

In Europe, the Greek physicians had made extensive use of butterbur in healing diseases. Butterbur is also utilized by Native American folk healers. The butterbur leaves, rhizomes and flowers are used for making herbal medicines.

Migraine remedy

Studies have shown that butterbur can help to reduce the symptoms of migraine. It can also help to prevent occurrence of migraine triggers. The rhizome and leaves of the herb are beneficial for treating migraine. It might take at least two to three months for the butterbur herb to produce any beneficial result. It might take several months before you can completely be cured of migraine.

Headache cure

Besides migraine, common headache could be healed with intake of butterbur. Although, butterbur medications usually available for treating headache are made from the root extract of the plant, extracts derived from the leaves of the butterbur herb are most effective in curing headache.

Asthma remedy

Folk healers recommend butterbur for reducing asthma symptoms and for easing breathing. The plant compounds present in this herb could reduce inflammations of the nasal membrane, reducing breathing difficulties. The rhizomes of the butterbur herb can also help to treat lung infections.

People suffering from asthma, lung infection and breathing difficulties could benefit from drinking butterbur tea. To prepare butterbur tea, dissolve one teaspoon of powdered butterbur root in a glass of water. Keep this mixture aside overnight. In the morning heat this mixture and drink it. Butterbur tea can also help to reduce fever.

Hay fever remedy

Hay fever, which is allergic reaction to pollens, could be treated with butterbur. Intake of butterbur helps to reduce sensitivity to pollen.

Treats high blood pressure

People suffering from hypertension could benefit from consumption of butterbur. This herb helps to lower as well as stabilize the blood pressure level.
