Medicinal Uses Of Celery Seeds

For centuries, celery seed is a popular herbal medicine used in Ayurveda. Modern studies have confirmed the health benefits of consuming celery seeds.

Nutrients in celery seeds

Celery seeds are a good source of calcium, magnesium, iron and manganese. The seeds contain moderate amounts of vitamin B6, zinc, copper, phosphorous and dietary fiber. It also contains plant compounds such as flavonoids and coumarins.

Natural diuretic

Celery seeds are used as natural diuretics. People suffering from edema could benefit from consumption of celery seeds. However, if you are taking prescription diuretics, you should consult your doctor before taking celery seeds. Consumption of celery seeds along with other diuretic can increase the risk of dehydration. This diuretic function of celery seeds could be utilized for treating bloating including premenstrual or menstrual bloating.

Reduces gout

Celery seeds are effective in treating gout. Uric acid build up in the body is associated with development of gout. The uric acid crystals accumulate in the joints, causing pain, inflammation and discomfort. The diuretic action of celery seeds could help to eliminate the excess uric acid through urination. This helps to reduce the symptoms of gout. The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, which can worsen from excess uric acid content in the body, could be treated with celery seeds.

Used for thinning blood

Celery seeds contain anticoagulant property. They can be used for thinning blood. Intake of celery seeds could help to prevent heart diseases and stroke resulting from clotting of blood. However, if you are taking any prescription anticoagulant, you should consult your physician before consuming celery seeds. Excess intake of anticoagulants might increase the risk of excess bleeding.

Lowers blood pressure

Studies have shown that intake of celery seeds could cause moderate reduction in the blood pressure level. People suffering from hypertension can take celery seeds to normalize their blood pressure level.

Reduces cholesterol

Celery seeds could help to lower the total cholesterol level in the blood stream. These seeds can help obese and overweight individuals to lose weight.

Good for the liver

Studies have shown that celery seeds could protect the liver from harmful toxins. People on long-term pain relieving medications could prevent liver damage by consuming celery seeds.

Prevents cancer

It is believed that celery seeds could prevent development of malignant cells, and reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
