Medicinal Uses of Licorice Root

Licorice is a native plant of Europe and Asia. The botanical name of licorice is glycyrrhiza glabra. The root of licorice is used as a natural sweetener and is added to candies and desserts.

Licorice root is 50 times sweeter than sugar and is therefore also known as sweet root. The licorice root and rhizome is also a popular ingredient in several herbal medicines.

Licorice root is rich in niacin, pantothenic acid, lecithin, vitamin E, biotin and manganese.

Here are some health benefits of licorice root:

Cures coughs

In traditional herbal medicines, licorice roots are widely used for treating cough and cold. Licorice root acts as a natural expectorant that helps to dissolve the mucus congestion in the chest. Licorice root can also be used for treating bronchitis, asthma and minor chest infections.

Cures stomach ulcer

In Europe and Japan, licorice root is used for treating stomach ulcer. According to a study, intake of licorice root could reduce the risk of ulcer in people who frequently consume aspirin. Licorice root extract could also help to reduce ulcer pain.

Good for the heart

Intake of licorice root could prevent cardiovascular diseases. Studies have shown that regular intake of licorice root extract could significantly reduce the levels of low-density lipoprotein and triglyceride in the blood within a month.

Reduces fat

Studies have shown that regular intake of around 3.5 grams of licorice root for about two months could help to lose excess body fat. This herb could therefore help obese and overweight individuals to lose weight. Moreover, topical application of licorice root extract could also help to decrease the thickness of the fat.

Treats symptoms of menopause

Licorice root contains phytoestrogen that could replenish the human estrogen lost during menopause. Studies have shown that intake of licorice root can help to improve symptoms of menopause. Symptoms of PMS could also be treated with this herb.

Cures depression

Licorice root is also used as a natural anti-depressant. It can also be used for reducing stress. Intake of licorice root could improve cognitive function and prevents memory loss.

Allergy remedy

This herb is recommended for healing allergic symptoms. Allergic rhinitis, hay fever and conjunctivitis could be healed with licorice roots.
