Medicinal Uses of Milk of Magnesia

Milk of magnesia is an alkaline solution comprising of magnesium hydroxide and water. The milk like appearance of the magnesium hydroxide suspension in water gives the solution the name milk of magnesia. Discovered by Charles Henry Philips in the late 19th century, milk of magnesium is a common household medicine used for treating common ailments.
Uses of milk of magnesia
Constipation remedy
Milk of magnesia is a popular remedy for constipation. It is used as a laxative. Milk of magnesia helps to increase the water content in the intestine, increasing the volume and reducing the hardness of the stool. By osmosis, the magnesium ions present in the milk of magnesia draw water into the intestine from the neighboring tissues. In addition, magnesium content of milk of magnesia stimulates secretion of cholecystokinin, which is a hormone associated with increasing the water and electrolyte content in the intestinal tract.
Indigestion remedy
Milk of magnesia is traditionally used for treating heartburn and indigestion. Increase in the acid content of the stomach causes acid reflux and heartburn. The alkalinity of milk of magnesium helps to reduce the acidity and cures heartburn.
Cures skin diseases
Milk of magnesia is good for the skin. It is used for treating several skin diseases. Milk of magnesia is used for treating cold sore and canker sore. Applying milk of magnesium on the sores, two to three times a day, helps to heal the sore and reduce the pain and burning sensations. Milk of magnesia helps to cure Seborrheic dermatitis. It can help to reduce the oiliness of the skin. If you are prone to acne, applying milk of magnesia on your face, at least once a day, could help to reduce the oiliness of the skin and prevent acne.
Side effects of milk of magnesia
Excess intake of milk of magnesia can produce serious side effects. The laxative property of milk of magnesia could cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. People suffering from kidney diseases should avoid milk of magnesia. Kidney flashes out magnesium from the body. Intake of milk of magnesia by kidney disease sufferers would overwork their kidneys, further complicating their kidney problems.
