Morning Sickness in Pregnancy


During pregnancy, hormonal changes occur in your body. Morning sickness is one of the unwelcome signs during this time. Nearly 50 to 80 percent pregnant women are bothered by nausea or vomiting during the first trimester of pregnancy. In overwhelming majority of pregnant women, morning sickness subsides within the 16th week of pregnancy. In a small number of pregnant women morning sickness occurs throughout pregnancy.

Causes of morning sickness

Just as most other signs of pregnancy, changes in hormonal balance are believed to be responsible for morning sickness. Rise in the estrogen and pregnancy hormones might cause this condition. Certain odors might trigger nausea. Nausea and vomiting often causes food aversion during pregnancy. You might even experience morning sickness without any apparent reason. Some health experts suggest that underlying illness and stress might prolong morning sickness and make it more severe.

Morning sickness remedies

Despite the irritating nature of morning sickness, it does not cause any harm to the fetus. Through some simple time honored methods, pregnant women could reduce the severity of morning sickness. Exhaustion tends to worsen morning sickness in pregnant women. During pregnancy, one must get enough sleep. Besides a sound sleep in the night, a short daytime nap could help to reduce nausea. After waking up in the morning, leave your bed slowly. Sudden movements might make you nauseated in the morning. Keep some dry fruits or biscuits at your bedside. Before leaving the bed, have some of these snacks. Do not remain on empty stomach for a long time.

Have five to six small meals and snacks throughout the day. To prevent dehydration from vomiting, drink plenty of water and fluids. Vitamin B6 supplements could sometimes reduce nausea. Sour foods such as lemons could help to reduce your nausea. Ginger tea and ginger ale are popular remedies for curing nausea. By sniffing lemon leaves or lemon rind, your morning sickness could be reduced. Avoid drinking caffeinated beverages. Potassium rich fruits such as banana could prevent nausea and morning sickness. Stay away from odors that make you nauseated. Sometimes iron supplements are responsible for this condition. Consult your doctor before taking dietary supplements.
