Myths About Nutritious Foods

January 19, 2009

Stories about good foods for the body float around in plenty. There are many tips that we read and hear about very often. Not all of them, though are very factual. In most cases, these are little pointers that have come down from the ages, generally from grandmothers. These hold little merit today. Here are some such myths regarding nutritious foods, and the impact that foods have on the body.

Today, we all hear enough and more about cholesterol. It is believed that cholesterol is all bad for the body. Some foods contain cholesterol that are very good for the body. These include olive oil, soya oil and nuts. These help regulate the flow of blood and keepthe arteries clear and from getting blocked.

Harmful cholesterol in the form of foods like cheese, mayonnaise, butter and vegetable oils are those that should be kept away since they have the tendency to block the arteries.

The best food for the body and skin is water. Since the body is made up mainly of water, it is a must that water be replaced adequately. We have all been told to believe that a minimum of eight glasses of water is a must for the body.

While there is complete truth in the fact that water is vital for the body, it can be consumed in any form. This would include juices, buttermilk, fruits, soups and also foods that have high content of water in them. If your diet includes plenty of these foods, eight glasses of water are not a must.

People believe that having too many sweets would increase the risk of suffering diabetes. While having more sugars might trigger the disability, it cannot cause it. Diabetes is caused by the inability of the pancreas to regulate the level of sugar in the body.

It is a blind belief that health foods are those that pack in a great deal for the body. However, not all health foods are good for the body since they have a lot of preservatives and chemicals.
