Natural Tooth Whiteners

November 13, 2009

We always want to display our pearl white teeth. However, often the teeth are marked with stain and become yellow. With proper oral care, we can prevent stains from appearing on the teeth. We can also make our teeth dazzle brightly with the help of easily available products.

Tooth stain prevention

Tooth discoloration or tooth stains can develop due to several factors. The food you take can make your teeth lose their bright white sparkle. To prevent your teeth from losing their natural shine, limit intake of tea, coffee, carbonated beverages and wines. Certain dark colored fruits and vegetables, such as berries and beetroot can cause discoloration of teeth. Cigarette smoking and chewing tobacco could make your teeth lose their natural whiteness.

Sometimes destruction of the enamel due to aging causes discoloration of the teeth. Side effects of certain medications can make the teeth lose their natural whiteness. Hypertension medications, antihistamines and certain antibiotics could cause discoloration of the teeth. Excessive fluoride use can cause teeth discoloration. Poor oral hygiene, genetics and trauma can also be responsible for the yellowing of teeth.

Natural tooth whitener

Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is widely used as a tooth whitener. You can make your own tooth whitener at home with hydrogen peroxide. Add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to a teaspoon of baking soda. Mix the ingredients to make a thick paste. Use this hydrogen peroxide and baking soda paste as toothpaste. This will help to remove the stains from your teeth, making them whiter.

Table salt

The abrasive property of table salt helps to remove the stains from the teeth. Mix one teaspoon of table salt with two to three spoons of baking soda. Use this homemade whitener for regularly cleaning your teeth.

Orange peel

To remove stains from your teeth, rub your teeth with the white portion of the orange peel. Instead of using fresh orange peel, use dry orange peel for cleaning your teeth. To enhance the cleaning power of the orange peel, you can add couple of dry basal leaves or dry bay leaves powder to your homemade orange peel teeth whitener.
