The common name “onion”, usually refers to Allium cepa, also known as the ‘garden onion’ or ‘bulb’ onion. It is amongst the oldest vegetable known to humankind. It is available in fresh, canned, pickled, chopped and dehydrated forms. Be it a cooked food item, or a salad dressing, onion has its place everywhere. However, few among us avoid onion, owing to the foul smell it leaves in our breath. Though rarely eaten on their own, they always accompany other food stuffs on the dining table.

The benefit of including onion in our diet is wide ranging. They have served to be effective in cases of common cold, diabetes, osteoporosis, and in curing cancer too. They contain, chemicals, which are anti-inflammatory in nature. They also have anti-cholesterol, anti-cancer and anti-oxidant properties. Reports say, increase in consumption of onions may reduce chances of cancer.

Onion has been used for curing boils and wounds. Onion extract is very helpful in curing tropical scars. Onions are important for women, especially during menopause; these destroy osteoclasts, thereby preventing osteoporosis in women.

The chemicals present in onion prevent sore throat .They are rich in flavnoids and phenols. The more the amount of onion in your body, the more is your resistance power. They tend to inhibit the growth of cancer in your body.

Onion inhibits tumor growth because it is rich in a variety of sulfides. Research shows that the Chinese-with the highest intake of onions and garlic-have 40 per cent less risks of cancer. As onion contains essential oils which are beneficial in heart diseases.

It also reduces blood cholesterol. Onion contains chromium which helps to decrease fasting glucose levels, improves glucose tolerance and lowers insulin levels.

Eye irritation can be got rid off, through cutting onions. The sulphenic acid brings tears to our eyes and removes the irritant from the eye.

Onions are all rounders, so, don’t forget to have an onion daily.
