Cherries get their deep red color from a substance known as anthocyanin. Studies have shown that the anti-inflammatory property of anthocyanin can be as effective as aspirin in reducing pain. Further, the antioxidant property of anthocyanin is comparable to vitamins C and E. Anthocyanin works in the same manner as popular painkillers, including aspirin and ibuprofen, by obstructing secretion of cyclooxygenas-1 and cyclooxygenase-2, substances responsible for causing inflammation and consequent pain.
Hence, you can replace your aspirin pill with twenty tart cherries to reduce pain. Tart cherries are also capable of reducing the level of uric acid in blood. High level of uric acid is one of the primary causes of gouts. Tart cherries can therefore act as your gout medicine.
