Prevent Hay Fever
October 27, 2009
Increase in pollen count in the spring, summer and fall increases the risk of hay fever. This is a common form of allergy that affects a large number of people. Some people are prone to hay fever throughout the year.
However, most experience hay fever during the seasons when the level of air borne allergens is too high. The medical term for hay fever is allergic rhinitis.
Causes of hay fever
Sensitivity to certain substances causes hay fever. Although, this allergic reaction is called hay fever, hay itself is not responsible for this condition. Seasonal hay fever is caused by pollen. Allergies during spring and summer are caused by tree and grass pollen. During fall, weed pollen triggers this condition. During hot and humid summer months, spores of mold and fungus can lead to hay fever.
Besides pollen, allergic reactions to dust mites, pet dander and cockroaches might trigger hay fever. Moreover, it has been observed that compared to women, men are more susceptible to hay fever. People with family history of hay fever, firstborns and people born during the pollen season have greater risk of developing this condition. Infants exposed to cigarette smoking are vulnerable to hay fever.
Symptoms of hay fever
The symptoms of hay fever appear soon after exposure to the allergens. The common symptoms of this disease include nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, itching of nose, throat and mouth, cough, sinus pressure, facial pain and reduced sensation to taste and smell.
Often we mistake hay fever for common cold. However, unlike common cold, people suffering from hay fever do not have fever, and the symptoms last as long as you remain exposed to the allergy causing substances.
The best way to avoid hay fever is to stay away from allergens responsible for this condition. Avoid going outdoors during the early morning, when the pollen counts are highest. To reduce indoor allergens, the indoor air of your house should to be too humid.
Excess humidity helps the dust mites to thrive. If you have pets in your house, keep them away from your bedroom. Having a teaspoon of honey regularly could help to reduce the symptoms of hay fever.
