Preventing Lung Cancer
October 9, 2009
Researchers are often unsure about the exact causes of lung cancer. Although, smokers have greater risk factors of developing lung cancer, this deadly disease can also affect the lungs of non-smokers. Nonetheless, we can take precautionary steps to prevent this disease.
If you are a non-smoker, do not start smoking. If you are a smoker, you should quit smoking immediately. Parents should advice their teenage children about the adverse reactions of smoking. Besides direct smoking, exposure to second hand smoke can also increase the risk of lung cancer. You should always stay away from smoking zones in public areas. Moreover, ensure that your house and workplace is free from tobacco smoke.
Avoid toxic chemicals
Inhalation of pollutants and toxic chemicals increases the risk of lung cancer. To prevent lung damage, when exposed to a polluted environment, you should always wear a face mask. Prolonged exposure to fumes, asbestos and radon increase the risk of lung cancer.
Diet
Your diet can help to reduce the risk of lung cancer. Researchers have found that consumption of adequate amounts of vitamin A and beta carotene rich foods could decrease the risk of developing lung cancers. Green, yellow and orange vegetables are rich sources of beta carotene.
However, studies have shown that beta carotene supplements might not prevent lung cancer. According to researchers, beta carotene supplement could increase the risk of lung cancer among smokers. To increase lung function, one can rely on vitamin D intake. Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant, could help to lower the risk of lung cancer.
Vitamin E can help to repair lung damages caused by cigarette smoking. Smoking reduces absorption of vitamin C. Vitamin C deficiency reduces absorption of vitamin E. To prevent lung cancer, you should consume adequate amounts of vitamin C rich food everyday.
Compared to non-smokers, smokers must consume more vitamins C and E. Some researchers claim that intake of plant estrogen could reduce the risk of lung cancer. Soy, chickpeas, legumes and whole grains contain plant estrogen. Milk thistle could reduce the risk of lung cancer. Studies have shown that silibinin, a flavanone found in this herb, could reduce growth of cancer cells in the lungs.
