When you feel tired or uncomfortable, a cup of piping hot coffee could help to lift your mood. Caffeine, present in coffee, replenishes our lost energy. Like any other food, coffee also has its share of pros and cons.
Benefits of drinking coffee
Although, coffee is the most popular beverage, but we have often been warned against the adverse affect of caffeine on our health. Traditionally intake of coffee is considered beneficial in lifting moods, reducing headaches, making us alert and increasing concentration.
However, several studies have shown that utility of coffee goes beyond lifting moods and replenishing our lost energy. Coffee, it is believed, could reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease. Coffee can reduce the risk of colon cancer by 25 percent.
Contrary to popular belief, coffee is not bad for our stomach. In fact, researches have shown that people who consume coffee every day, have 80 percent less chance of developing liver cirrhosis, and 50 percent less chance of having gall bladder stones. According to some studies, by drinking coffee everyday, smokers and heavy drinkers could reduce the risk of developing heart and liver ailments.
Caffeine is found to be good for our oral health. The antibacterial and anti-adhesive property of trigonelline, present in coffee, is capable of preventing dental cavities. Coffee could control, as well as reduce asthma attacks.
Coffee is not only loaded with caffeine. It also contains antioxidants, such as, chlorogenic acid, tocopherol, quinines and magnesium. These antioxidants are capable of increasing the insulin sensitivity of people suffering from diabetes.
Disadvantages of drinking coffee
If you want to get most of the benefits of drinking coffee, while avoiding the harmful affects of caffeine, remember to drink coffee in moderation. Drink not more than two to three cups of brewed coffee every day. There are several side effects of excess coffee consumption. Excess caffeine in the body causes anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, headaches, muscle tremors, gastrointestinal problems, diarrhea, nausea and abnormal heartbeat.
