November 10, 2009
Razor bumps, also known as pseudofolliculitis barbae, are lesions that develop after shaving. The inflammations usually occur in men with curly facial hair. If left untreated, the bumps may leave scars on the face, which could be difficult to heal.
Risk factors of razor bump
Men with natural course and tight curled facial hair are prone to razor bumps. Although, men irrespective of their racial origin can be affected by this problem, usually overwhelming majority of razor bump sufferers are men of African, Mediterranean and Jewish descent. If you have curly facial hair, regular shaving increases the risk of developing razor bumps.
Symptoms of razor bumps
Razor bumps are pimple like lesions. They are red or skin colored.
Razor bump prevention
With proper shaving technique, razor bumps could be prevented. If you are prone to razor bumps, avoid regular shaving. Do not use double or triple razors for shaving. It has been seen that using electric razors for shaving could reduce appearance of razor bumps. To prevent razor bumps, you should give your facial hair at least two to three days to re-grow, before the next shave. Sharp angular cuts are largely responsible for razor bumps. Before you start shaving, wet your face with warm water. This helps to soften the hair, helping to produce an even cut.
To soften the facial skin and hair further, build a rich lather with a good shaving cream on your face. Allow the lather to remain on your face for sometime. This increases the skin lubrication, providing a better protection from the sharp edges of the razor blade. To prevent close shave, do not shave the same area of your face more than two times. Always use a clean razor or blade for shaving. Dirty razors increase the risk of skin infection. Changing the blade, at least once a week, could reduce the risk of razor bumps.

Certain herbs can be effective in treating razor bumps. Witch hazel could help to heal the bumps. Tea tree oil a powerful disinfectant could help to cure the inflammation and infection. To heal razor bumps, you can also apply chamomile oil.
