Rebound Headache Prevention

November 28, 2009

Several factors might trigger headaches. You can easily ward off occasional headaches with an over-the-counter pain relief medication. However, if you are frequently using pain relief medicines, at least two to three times a week, headaches might recur, causing rebound headache.

Intake of excess headache medicines, more than the prescribed limit, will make you susceptible to headache. Rebound headache develops when your body adapts to the headache medication. With overuse of headache medication, you become accustomed to the medication, which overtime loses its effectiveness, resulting in worsening of the headache. Stopping the use of headache medications could help you to escape the cycle of rebound headaches.

The treatment involved in breaking the rebound headache cycle can be quite painful. The patient might suffer from withdrawal syndrome and would require hospitalization. Preventing overuse of headache medications and treating headaches through natural techniques could help to prevent the painful rebound headaches.

Reduce stress

Stress is one of the major reasons for headaches in modern life. Practicing stress management could help to prevent headaches. Planning your work schedule, organizing work and a positive attitude towards life could help to handle most of your woes. Meditation and deep breathing exercises could help to calm your mind. Relaxing, listening to soothing music, reading a book, going for a walk or even taking a warm bath could help to reduce stress.

Sleep

A sound sleep helps to cure headache. Maintaining a regular sleep routine, going to bed and waking up at the same time could help to prevent headache.

Identify triggers

Often certain factors tend to trigger headaches. By maintaining a headache diary, you could identify the factors that trigger your headache. Certain foods, chemical substances, temperature changes, bright light, loud sound and stress could trigger headache. Avoiding the factors that trigger headache could help to prevent rebound headaches.

Healthy meal

Having a healthy meal, having your meals at the same time everyday and not skipping meals could help to prevent headaches. Drinking plenty of water helps to hydrate the body and reduce headache. Taking zinc rich food could help to reduce headache, especially in women who experience headache before menstrual period.

Regular exercise

Physical activity could help to prevent headaches. Regular physical activity increases secretion of chemicals capable of blocking the pain signals.
