Red Clover Benefits

July 25, 2009

For thousands of years red clover has been consumed for its medicinal properties. This plant with pinkish purple colored blossoms is variously known as purple clover, cow clover, sweet clover and trifolium.

Menopause symptom treatment

At least four compounds, present in red clover, have estrogen like function. These plant estrogens, namely genistein, biochanin-A, daidzein and formonetin, is beneficial for reducing symptoms of menopause. Drop in the estrogen level during menopause make women susceptible to cardiovascular diseases. The loss in elasticity of the blood vessels, which slackens the blood circulation, is partially to be blamed for this condition.

According to a study, red clover is capable of improving the elasticity of arteries and veins, consequently improving blood circulation in the body. Diabetes patients, who suffer from slackened blood circulation, could also improve blood circulation in their body by taking red clover. Women with small breasts could also take red clover to enlarge breasts naturally.

Prostate problem remedy

Plant estrogens present in red clover is beneficial not only for women, but it can also help elderly men suffering from prostate problems. It is believed that red clover could treat symptoms associated with enlarged prostate.

Fights infection

Red clover contains antibacterial property. It is effective in curing infections. Red clover is useful for treating respiratory tract infections, coughs and colds. It acts as a decongestant. The antibacterial property of red clover can be utilized in healing serious infection, such as venereal disease and even tuberculosis. Red clover is also useful for healing skin diseases, such as psoriasis and eczema.

Treats cancer

Red clover is also effective in treating cancer. Genistein and daidzein, two chemicals present in red clover, could arrest growth of cancer cells. Tocopherol, which is a type of vitamin E, present in red clover, could prevent cancer through its antioxidant property. However, the estrogen like chemicals makes red clover unsuitable for women suffering from breast cancer.

Good for the heart

Red clover is one of the best sources of isoflavones. These plant chemicals are known for their powerful antioxidant properties. Antioxidants prevent oxidation of bad cholesterol, preventing the occurrence of several diseases. Red clover is therefore good for the cardiovascular health.
