Remedies for Dry Eyes

Dry eyes are a condition in which the eyes become dry due to the lack of tears. The tears contains proteins, water, oils, mucus, antibodies etc and this will help you to maintain the moisture level in the eyes which in turn is necessary for correct vision.
Dry eyes are considered as a rare disease and are seen mostly affecting people above 65 years old. Dry eyes are otherwise called Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca.
Dry eye is produced because of the inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye. Conjunctiva is mucous membrane seen inside the eyelid and covering the eyeball.
Allergies are a major reason for dry eyes. Allergies due to mold, dust, mildew etc can cause dry eyes. Estrogen deficiency during hysterectomy or menopause may also cause dry eyes. Medications like antidepressants, diuretics etc also cause the same.
Infections on the eye surface, eye abnormalities, uses of contact lens also cause dry eyes. Environmental problems like high altitudes, low humidity, over exposure to sun, extreme wind, air pollution etc also act as culprit.
Symptoms of Dry Eyes
The major problem associated with dry eyes is unclear vision. There may be irritation, swelling, redness, persistent stinging etc accompanied with dry eyes. Sometimes the patient may experience sensitivity to light. It also produces a feeling of having sand inside the eyes.
Home Remedies for Dry Eyes
Water
Lubricate your eyes with water splashes. This will help you to get rid of dry eyes.
Warm Compress
Apply a clean and neat wash cloth dipped in warm water over your closed eyes and lie down for some time. This will add moisture to your eyes.
Diet
Increase your fish intake as it contains oil which helps you to lubricate your eyes. Try to avoid the use of vegetable oil in your food. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables especially citrus fruits and green leafy vegetables. Include a lot of water in your daily diet other than the fruit juices.
Apply almond oil on the skin around your eyes. This will be absorbed easily and will lubricate your eyes. You can apply this twice daily. Instead of almond oil you can also apply castor oil.
