Remedies for Dry Mouth
August 4, 2009
The saliva secreted by the salivary glands, present in the mouth, keeps our mouths moist. However, if for some reason the saliva secretion decreases, our mouths become dry.
Dry mouth is the root of several oral diseases. It increases the risk of tooth decay, gingivitis and oral infections. When we eat, saliva mixes with food inside the mouth, aiding digestion. Dry mouth could to some extent slow down food digestion.
Dry mouth causes
Your mouth may become dry for several reasons. Dryness of mouth can occur if you breathe through your mouth. Saliva secretion could drop from smoking and chewing tobacco. Dehydration, which causes excessive water loss through vomiting, perspiration, fever, burns and bleeding causes dry mouth.
Dry mouth can be the side effects of certain drugs or medical treatments. Injury or removal of the salivary glands and nerve damage can also significantly reduce saliva production. Certain illnesses such as diabetes, anemia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, mumps, stroke and hypertension can cause dry mouth.
Dry mouth symptoms
Besides experiencing dryness in the mouth, dry mouth is characterized by dryness in the throat, excessive thirst, bad breath and burning sensation inside the mouth. The tongue becomes red and dry. Sores may develop in the mouth. Dry mouth also dries up the nasal passage. There will be difficulty in eating, swallowing and even talking. Your voice can also become hoarse.
Dry mouth home remedies
To cure dry mouth, doctors prescribe medications that stimulate saliva secretion. To prevent your mouth from dying up, drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. Sucking candy can stimulate saliva production. Chewing gums can also prevent dry mouth.
However, while chewing gums or sucking candy, to save your teeth from damage, select only the sugar-free varieties. Sucking ice can also keep your mouth moist. You should always breathe through your nose and not through your mouth.
Saliva production can be stimulated by eating fiber rich fruits and vegetables. Dry mouth often causes tooth decay. Choosing the right toothpaste and proper brushing is recommended to prevent teeth and gum complications.
Stay away from spicy, rich and acidic foods, since they could further worsen the symptoms of dry mouth.
