Remedies for Enlarged Heart

January 5, 2010

Enlarged heart is a debilitating condition that adversely affects the quality of life. It is not a disease, but the condition develops from some other underlying disease or condition such as high blood pressure, defect of the heart valve or congenital heart disease.

When the heart is forced to pump blood at a rate that is higher than the normal rate, for a prolonged period, it becomes enlarged. Health disorders that force the heart to work harder harm the heart by enlarging it. Sometimes heart enlargement occurs temporarily. Temporary enlarged heart could be reversed through medications or surgery.

Risk factors for enlarged heart

Taking care of risk factors that increase the risk of heart enlargement can help to prevent this condition. Untreated hypertension is one of the major causes of enlarged heart. Untreated congenital heart diseases increase the risk of this heart disorder. Risk of enlarged heart is greater among people with a family history of enlarged heart.

People suffering from any form of heart valve disease could develop enlarged heart if the valvular heart disease remains untreated. People with coronary heart disease might suffer from enlarged heart. The clogged arteries, force the heart to pump harder to sustain blood flow throughout the body, increasing the risk of enlarged heart.

Enlarged heart remedies

By treating the underlying health ailments responsible for this heart disorder, enlarged heart could be cured. People with enlarged heart experience shortness of breath. You can reduce the symptoms of this disease by reducing your body weight through moderate physical activities as advised by your cardiologist. Studies have shown that regular aerobic exercises could shrink the enlarged heart. In folk medicine, asparagus is prescribed for people with enlarged heart.

Asparagus juice is blended with honey in the ratio of 2:1. To reduce the discomfort caused by this heart condition, one teaspoon of this asparagus and honey mix should be taken thrice every day. High blood pressure and edema, jointly force the heart to pump harder, worsening the condition of the enlarged heart. To treat high blood pressure and edema, people with enlarged heart should limit salt intake. They should quit smoking. Excess alcohol consumption could worsen their condition.
