Remedies for Ingrown Toenail

The problems of ingrown toenails develops when the nails of the toe grows in to the adjacent skin and then cause inflammation around this. Then the affected toe becomes red in color and swells. It is often accompanied by pus, blood or watery discharge. This situation leads to pain in the toes. You can treat this at your home with the help of some home remedies.

Treatment for Ingrown Toenail

Soak in Warm Water

Soak your affected toenail in warm water and keep it for 20 minutes. This makes the skin around the toenail soft. Then rub the skin softly and make it soft. This may help you to disembody the ingrown toenail and can cut it easily.

Keeping a Cotton Pad

Keep a very small piece of cotton in between the edge of the nail and skin. This may help you to lift the nail a little bit and thus the nail can grow past the skin that it digs in to.

Epsom Salt

Immerse your feet in a bucket of warm water containing one tablespoon of Epsom salt. Keep the toes immersed in this water for about 10 minutes. Repeat this two times a day. This will reduce the inflammation and the related pain.

Lemon

Cut a lemon in to wedge shape and keep it on the affected toe and secure it there with the help of a band aid. Keep the lemon waged on the toe for the entire night. This may help you to heal the infection and also to make the skin soft.

Trimming the Nails

While trimming the toe nails take care to avoid cutting them too short or beyond the toe. This is because the pressure on the feet pushes the skin in front of the nail and the toenail may tend to grow in to the skin and cause infection. So while trimming the nails care should be taken to cut them straight rather than cutting in curved manner.

In order to avoid ingrown toenail problems you need to wear shoes that are perfectly matching to you and avoid the use of tight fitting shoes. If possible leave your feet open to get as much as air circulation.
