Remedies for Keloids

After a wound heals, it often leaves a scar behind. Normally the scar occurs at the site of the injury. It might heal naturally or medical intervention might be needed for treating the scar. Keloid is a form of scar that keeps on growing, expanding beyond the site of the wound. It is slightly raised, pink or purple in color and has a smooth surface.

Causes of keloids

Researchers have not yet discovered the exact cause of keloids. It is believed that perhaps abnormal cellular signals are responsible for developing keloids. It has been observed that children and older adults are less likely to develop keloids. People of African, Asian, Hispanic and Italian origin are most vulnerable to this skin disorder.

People with a family history of keloids might be susceptible to this skin disorder. Keloids might develop on the back, chest, shoulder, jaw line and earlobes. Piercing the earlobes increases the risk of development of keloids on the earlobes. Although, keloids usually develop at the site of a surgery or major wound, but minor wounds, piercing and burns could also trigger their development. Mild skin inflammations, such as acne, could even trigger keloids.

Remedies for keloids

These unsightly scars can sometimes cause itching and pain. Current treatments are not always effective in healing the scars. Certain home remedies have been found to be effective in treating keloids. Applying apple cider vinegar on the scar regularly, four to five times a day, could help to reduce the scar and cure irritation. Crushed garlic or garlic oil can help to heal keloids. Keloid could be treated by applying tea tree oil on the scar.

Aloe Vera gel could also help to reduce the scar. Folk healers sometimes recommend calendula oil for removing the scar. You can also try St. John’s Wort or comfrey root extract for treating this skin disorder. An effective keloid removal remedy could be made by crushing three aspirin tablets and adding little water to make a smooth paste. Apply this aspirin tablet paste on the keloid scar two to three times a day, daily. Your scar will fade gradually. Potassium iodide solution could be applied on the scar four to five times a day. This could help to cure keloids within a few days.
