Trigeminal Neuralgia
Trigeminal neuralgia is a severe and shocking pain that is experienced on the face. This sudden attack may last for seconds to minutes and may repeat several times a day. Sometimes it may subside for several days or months and may restart again. This pain may also impair the daily activities of the affected person. This condition may at times leads to depression and anxiety in the affected people. Usually the trigeminal nerves in the face are damaged due to compression from the near by blood vessels or injury and this nerve may loss its protective coating.
Then this nerve may send abnormal signals to the brain and that creates the pain on then face. The maxillary and mandibular branches of trigeminal nerves are mostly gets affected. When the maxillary branch is affected then it causes pain in upper lips, nose, upper teeth and on cheek. If the mandibular branch is affected then it causes pain on jaw, lower lips and cheek. Here are certain home remedies that may help to get relief from this pain.
Remedies for the Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia
Epsom salt
Make a solution that is rich in Epsom salt and take it in a bowl. In another bowl take some hot water. Now dip a towel in Epsom salt solution and squeeze out the excess water. Then keep the towel at the basal part of the neck. Then change the towel with a towel dipped in water. Repeat this for about 10 minutes and this may help to reduce the severe pain.
Hot and Cold Therapy
The electric shock like pain that occurs due to the compression of trigeminal nerve can be eased with the alternate hot and cold compress. Get a plastic bag filled with ice cubes and keep it on the side of the face where pain is being experienced. Then change the ice bag with a wet cloth kept in the microwave oven. Like this change the hot and cold clothes and every compress may last for about three minutes. Continue this till the pain subsides.
Essential Oil
Rub the affected area with essential oils like peppermint oil, evening primrose oil etc and this helps you to get rid of the pain.
Herbal Tea
Make a decaffeinated herbal tea and to this add St. John Wort of about one tablespoon and a few drops of lavender. Mix them well and drink this two times a day. You can also use chamomile, devil’s claw and burdock decoctions as they will boost the blood circulation to the affected region.
Omega 3 fatty acid, vitamin B12 etc may also help you to strengthen the trigeminal nerve and the tissues on the face and neck.
