November 16, 2009

Dry Vagina

Vaginal dryness is a common issue faced by many women. Usually vagina produces lubricants and the amount of lubricants produced may vary among different women. When the amount of lubricants in vagina decreases then it becomes uncomfortable, irritating and itchy for you. Sexual intercourse will become painful and vagina and labia becomes thinner and paler. It may also cause irritation while wearing tight cloths. Vaginal dryness in turn may increase your chances for getting urinary infection and you may have frequent urge for urination.

Causes of Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness can be a result of certain medication, use of condoms, chemotherapy, use of tampons, stress, pregnancy, breast feeding, douches etc. Sexually transmitted diseases may also lead to vaginal dryness. The most commonly seen reason for vaginal dryness is the lack of a hormone called estrogen. This condition occurs mostly during menopause and at times before menopause too. Due to the lack of hormones the vaginal tissues becomes less oxygenated and thus results in minimal blood flow. Thus vaginal lining becomes thinner by losing some of its inner folds. It may also loss its elasticity and becomes dryer. Lack of estrogen also reduces the production of mucus from the tiny glands present in the cervix.

Remedies for Vaginal Dryness

Sesame Oil

Soak a cotton pad in sesame oil. Use this soaked cotton pad to massage the vaginal walls. Continue this for a week and this will help you to restore the lubrication.

Fenugreek Seed

Boil a tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in a cup of water for about 15 minutes. Cool the liquid and take it once in a day. This will be an ideal remedy for vaginal dryness due to menopause.

Comfrey Root

Make an infusion comfrey root by immersing two quarts of comfrey roots per liter of warm water. Take a hip bath in this infusion daily. This will help you to make the vaginal tissues strong, flexible and soft.

Rice

Take 500 ml water and to this add a handful of rice and boil it to make a broth. Drink this broth daily and this will help you to maintain the moisture level from inside.

Also take a lot of water and avoid the use of caffeine, soda, tea etc.
