Remedy for Belching
July 4, 2009
Belching or burping is something, which all of us, irrespective of our age or gender, have experienced. The process of noisily expelling gas from the stomach through the mouth is known as belching. Belching occurs when there is excess air in the stomach.
Belching is not a serious medical problem. It is normal to belch. If you eat excessive fatty foods, heartburn may accompany belching.
Do not swallow air
Accumulation of air in the stomach is responsible for belching. Most air enters our stomach, while we eat. Often we have been advised not to talk while eating. If we talk while eating, we allow air to enter our stomach. Swallowing excessive saliva can also cause burping. To prevent belching, we should eat slowly, chewing the food properly.
We also swallow air while speaking. This is a habit, which we do unconsciously. Studies have found that excessive or repetitive burping follows a behavioral trend. It is believed that excessive belching is a something that we learn consciously.
However, over time it becomes our second nature, which we start practicing unconsciously. If you have the habit of swallowing air while speaking, you should work to change your speaking pattern. Changing your habit is a gradual process.
Since swallowing air while speaking occurs unconsciously, you need help from your family and friends to correct your behavioral pattern. As soon as they spot signals of swallowing air while speaking, they should alert you immediately.
Drinking water with a straw causes excess air to enter our stomach. If you suffer from excessive belching, sip water directly from a glass.
Avoid carbonated drinks
If you suffer from excessive burping, avoid carbonated drinks. Colas, sodas and beer cause burping.
Foods cause belching
If you suffer from excessive burping, limit foods that produce wind in the stomach. Cabbage, onion, chocolate, soy, peanuts, citrus fruits, milk and milk products are sometimes responsible for increasing belching. The air content is high in whipped foods, such as milk shakes. These foods are capable of increasing burping.
Avoid chewing gum
Swallowing excess saliva causes belching. Chewing gum makes as swallow saliva. If you are prone to belching, avoid chewing gum.
