What is Rosacea
Rosacea is a common skin inflammatory condition that appears mainly on the face. At times it may affect the eyes also. It cause redness, small pus filled red pustules and later forms thickened skin. It affects people between the age of 30 and 60 years and is more common in women than in men. Rosacea is a common problem in women during their menopause.
The actual cause of rosacea is unknown but certain facts trigger the formation of rosacea and it includes sun damage, abnormalities in the facial blood vessels, family history, family history, stress, caffeine, hot drinks etc.
Symptoms of Rosacea
Symptoms of rosacea vary from person to person. The most commonly seen symptom of rosacea is flushing. The flushing may start from the face and may moves down to the neck and at times to the chest. At this time the skin may become hot. Many people may have sensitive blood vessels in their face and it will be nearer to the skin. These blood vessels dilate easily to the triggers like sunlight, touch etc. When hundred of capillaries near the skin dilate it causes red coloration that may persist for long time. In advanced stage there develops spots, pustules and papules on the face.
When the rosacea is left untreated then the small blood vessels in the cheeks and nose becomes inflamed and swells. This creates a visible spider web like markings on the face. In extreme conditions the facial skin around the nose gets thickened and the nose becomes enlarged and bulbous. This enlarged condition of nose is called rhinophyma and is more common in men than in women. The excess proteins and fluid with in the blood vessels leaks out and makes it difficult for the lymphatic system to drain the leakage. This causes swelling in the facial skin.
At times rosacea affects the eyes also and makes it bloodshot with a burning and gritty sensation. There may be inflammation inside the eyelid causing conjunctivitis. There may be loss of eye lashes at times.
Rosacea is often confused with acne, sunburn etc. If you have more than one of these symptoms then you have to consult a doctor.
