Sebaceous Cysts – Causes and Remedies

Sebaceous cyst is a lump that develops underneath the surface of the skin. It is sometimes also referred as epidermoid cyst. Other than the ugly appearance of the bump, sebaceous cysts are harmless in nature. However, risk of infection increases if these bumps rupture. Rarely, sebaceous cysts might develop into skin cancer.

Causes of sebaceous cyst

Sebaceous cyst comprises of a keratin-filled sac. The wall of the sac is made of epidermal cells. These cells are present on the epidermis or the outer layer of the skin. If for some reason the epidermal cells fail to shed from the surface of the skin, they might move below the surface of the skin, usually around the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Here these cells multiply, forming a sac. They secrete keratin, which remains trapped in the sac. Sebaceous cysts develop in portions of the skin with small hair follicles and large sebaceous or oil glands.

It usually develops on the face, neck, groin and upper back. The abnormal multiplication of the epidermal cells below the surface of the skin can occur from damage to the hair follicles. People suffering from acne have a higher risk of developing sebaceous cysts. Acne might rupture, damaging the sebaceous gland or the hair follicle, making it easier for the abnormal multiplication of the epidermal cells. Sometimes sebaceous cysts are symptoms of rare genetic disorders such as Gardner’s syndrome.

Sebaceous cysts are least likely to appear before puberty. It has been observed that men, more than women, have a greater risk of developing sebaceous cysts. Prolonged exposure to sunlight could increase the risk of sebaceous cysts. Sometimes sebaceous cysts appear as small whitehead like deep-seated bumps on the forehead and cheeks. These small cysts are called milia.

Sebaceous cyst treatment and prevention

Although, sebaceous cysts are usually harmless, but for cosmetic reasons these cysts should be surgically removed. If the sebaceous cyst ruptures, causes irritation and pain or grows fast, immediate medical intervention is needed to prevent complications. To prevent scarring, carbon dioxide laser is used for removing the cyst. By preventing skin injury and acne, you can reduce the risk of sebaceous cysts. Sun block and oil free cosmetics could help to prevent development of sebaceous cysts.
