Seborrheic Dermatitis or seborrhea is a kind of dandruff, which is more severe than the common dandruff. The overactive sebaceous glands are responsible for this condition. Although, seborrhea does not pose any health risks, nonetheless, it can cause a lot of discomfort.
Seborrheic dermatitis causes
Overactive sebaceous gland increases the risk of seborrheic dermatitis. The excess oil is ideally suited for the growth of the yeasts that live in the hair follicles. The unnatural yeast growth causes seborrheic dermatitis. Bacterial infection could further worsen the symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis.
Seborrheic dermatitis symptoms
Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by dry or greasy white flakes. The skin might become red and itchy. It usually occurs on the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelids. You can also find seborrhea behind the ears, sides of the nose and on the chest. Sometimes it occurs in the groin, ear canals or under the arms. Seborrhea affects people of all ages.
However, children below 3 years of age and the elderly are particularly susceptible to this condition. In children, seborrheic dermatitis is commonly known as cradle cap. It has been observed that stress, neurological disorders such as epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease could increase the risk of developing this condition. Compared to women, men are more vulnerable to this condition.
