Senna Laxative

Senna Tea to Cure Constipation

Senna is a herb that is used widely for its medicinal properties. The tea made out of senna is very popular for curing constipation. Senna tea has a bitter taste and it can be used for softening the stool and thus to relieve the constipation problems.

It is highly useful for peopleĀ  who have hemorrhoids. Senna tea is also recommended for those patients who had rectal surgery. For making tea the leaves of the senna plant is collected after five months of planting and dried in sun.

The anthraquinones present in senna leaves act strongly on the intestinal walls and thus it provides strong peristaltic movements. Peristaltic movements lead to the movement of waste products through the intestine and hence the intestinal walls get less time to absorb water from the waste. So the stool formed will be soft and can be eliminated easily.

Side Effects of Senna Tea

You are not recommended to use senna tea for a long period. You can have senna tea for one to one and a half weeks. This is because senna tea makes the peristaltic movements fast and hence the absorption of nutrients through the intestinal walls becomes less and you will be deprived of nutrients.

For example, lack of nutrients like potassium may cause heart problems. If you are taking any other medicines then you should discuss it with your doctor as senna may intensify the effects of other medicines and may cause problems to your health.

Tips to Make Senna Tea

Take one and a half cup of water and to this steep one tea bag of senna. To this add the peels of a red potato. You can add a slice of potato meat too. Then add one teaspoon each of either oat bran or wheat and flax seeds. Keep this solution in low flame for five to ten minutes and then filter the liquid from it.

If you keep the solution for twenty minutes then you will get a stronger tea. Drink the tea when it becomes cool and take only three ounces of tea at a time.

When ever you have constipation try to cure it with senna tea and remember to use senna tea for only one and a half week.
