Senses and Sensibilities of Ageing

November 10, 2008

It is common knowledge that a factor of ageing involves the loss of memory, which eventually leads to senility. This condition is not a necessity, and both senility and loss of memory can be prevented if precautions are taken early on.

The brain is the key organ in maintaining the health of the senses. The brain contains large amounts of fat. It also produces the highest amount of free radicals. These must be kept in check, an action carried out by antioxidants. For enough antioxidants to be produced, the immunity levels need to be high. All of this can be achieved with a proper diet. With poor diets, pollutants, and increased stress levels ageing of the body and brain is increased.

Vitamin E protects the brain against oxidative stress. Vitamin E supplements and sufficient intakes of garlic help keep the neurons from getting damaged. Vitamin C is also known to prevent free radical damage.

Ginseng is another gift to this cause. It helps prevent damage of brain cells and helps deal with stress better. It also helps normalise other body functions.

Vitamin B12 is perhaps the most potent form, and is called brain food. Nuerological disturbances are characteristics of old age as the ability to assimilate these vitamins is reduced. Disturbances like loss of balance, poor vision, mood swings and senility. Milk and its products, red meats, eggs and fish contain B12.

It is important for vegetarians to take supplements since they cannot derive this vitamin from their regular food.

Taking sufficient antioxidants as supplements and also from natural foods helps prevent loss of memory and senility. Correct eating habits and control of the lifestyle is however, the single most important factor in keeping the body and senses in check for life.
