Walnuts are very good for children. Try giving them walnuts either directly, or make interesting desserts with them. Brownies, cakes and other sweets can be made using walnuts that not only mask their slight bitterness, but make them more tasty, while retaining their properties.
The Indian Walnut is covered by a hard shell and the fruit inside resembles the human brain in its shape. It is a tonic, unctuous, sweet in taste, and heavy and hot in action. Its post digestive action is sweet. It subsides the air element and aggravates the water and fire elements in the body. It is also an aphrodisiac.
Like almonds, the walnut should also be masticated well while eating. The oil extracted from this dry fruit is used as a purgative or laxative like castor oil. Patients suffering from chronic rheumatism are given soup prepared from it. Being heavy in digestion, too much quantity of the walnut should not be taken.
The leaves of the plant are also used. The decoction made from the walnut is given to ladies suffering from leucorrhoea and backache. It is beneficial to children suffering from rickets. Its oil is useful in curing tapeworms. The ideal dosage is between half and one ounce.
A decoction made with the bark of the tree helps in drying up breast milk. It is also used to cure sore throats with gargling.
