Sleeping Disorders


Sleep is naturally occurring state, distinguished by total or partial unconsciousness and inactivity of all voluntary muscles. Although the purpose and mechanism of sleep is still not fully explored and is subject of intense research. According to various researches done so far, it is now known that sleep has a certain pattern and few sleeping disorders such as:

? Restless legs syndrome (RLS) – it is a neurological movement disorder characterized by an irresistible feeling in the legs associated with need to move.

It mostly affects the legs and sensations may include aches, burning, tingling feeling in the muscles. Moving of legs gives feeling of temporarily relief. It has been associated with iron deficiency, some drugs such as anti-histamines, pregnancy, smoking and nerve diseases can trigger RLS .In extreme cases it can lead to insomnia.  In mild cases, massages, hot baths and regular excessive can give relief.

? Anxiety – it is state of nervousness, tension and anxious thoughts which can keep you awake nights or wake you up in the middle of your sleep. Sometimes, people tends to increase their caffeine intake, leading to induction of caffeine induced sleep disorder. Such anxiety disorder can take forms of panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder.

? Sleep related eating disorder – it is combination of parasomnia and eating disorder wherein a person is in state of sleepwalking that include behavior related to persons conscious wishes or wants. Its treatment includes trying behavioral approaches such as not having food in the house and medication.

? Sleep apnea – it is a chronic medical condition wherein the person repeatedly stops breathing during the night sleep for the period of 10 seconds.

This leads to the decrease levels of oxygen in blood. Obesity is one of the main inducing factors for sleep apnea. In sleep apnea person shows major signs of snoring and fatigue as airways are blocked and muscles and soft tissues in the throat relax.

? Narcolepsy – it is chronic sleep disorder and condition usually associated with person’s indulgence in excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). In this person encounter extreme fatigue and falls asleep at inappropriate times, such at work or at school. Such persons are most likely have disturbed nocturnal sleep and abnormal daytime sleep pattern. Narcoleptic usually experience the rapid eye movement (REM) stage within ten minutes, whereas most people take more than thirty minutes.
